Buck, Big Bad Boxer Dog
I was sitting on the bench down at Lake Wilderness after having taken my morning walk just enjoying the view of the lake when around the corner comes a happy smiley Boxer dog with a young lady following behind him. She shouted out, "do you mind him being off the lease"? Trail regulations state that all dogs must be on a leash, but not everyone follows that, and really that doesn't bother me. "Nah, don't worry about it. I've never met a dog that I couldn't get along with" I added. But then my thoughts quickly turned to 'Buck'.
I first saw Buck when I went up to visit some friends up in West Virginia. They had a nice spread of about 5 acres up in the hills. After having looked at the property, I opened the sliding doors and walked out back to look around. "Don't get too close to the fence" Donald yelled out. When I got out there, I saw the biggest Boxer I had ever seen in my life. He was big, and he was ugly. He must have stood a head taller than any Boxer I've ever run across. I was amazed at his size and was just standing there admiring him when Donald mentioned "you should have seen his father, bigger then him". No, if he was anything like Buck, I don't want to see him. As I was gazing at Buck, he casually walked over to the fence and at the last moment started snarling, slobbering and showing me all of his nice white teeth. Apparently, this was a normal greeting for Buck. He continued to give me that 'Old Yeller' look for a good period of time. His eyes were almost demonic.
Well, after about 5 minutes of this, I decided to wander back in the house. Donald mentioned that they had just separated the female from him about a week ago. He was getting too aggressive with her. Well now, that sort of explains it I thought. But apparently, this was just Buck's nature. Maybe he had a rough upbringing, or possibly got confused along the way and fancied himself as a Pit Bull, but whatever the reason, I wanted no parts of Buck.
I like dogs, but Buck didn't quite seem to fit into that category. He was the biggest, meanest dog that I've encountered and the strange thing is that he was a Purebreed Boxer. My recollections of Boxers is a playful, cherry, good natured dog. Well, in any event, I hope they don't decide to use Buck as a stud. I don't think we need a bunch of little Bucks running around giving Boxers a bad rap, and scaring big tattooed guys like me. I mean I have an image to uphold here.
